Tucked along Oregon’s rugged coastline, Tillamook makes for a solid weekend getaway where you can dig into rich local flavors, explore dramatic coastal views, and get a little mud on your tires if you're up for it. It’s not flashy or overdone—just a genuine small-town experience with a few surprises.
Wednesday: Eugene, Oregon
We spent the evening in Eugene exploring a mix of creativity and low-key fun, starting with a walk through the outdoor market near the Gordon Hotel. We grabbed ice cream while wandering, then headed upstairs to the hotel’s rooftop for tacos and a view of the city just as the sky started to shift colors. Later, we ended up sketching at their downstairs art bar with a drink in hand, surrounded by paint markers. Just when we thought the night was over, we found the hidden speakeasy—tucked behind a janitor’s door—finishing the night with a perfectly made cocktail and the kind of unexpected experience that makes a city stay with you.
Thursday: Welcome to Dairy Country
We rolled into Tillamook just in time to catch a golden-hour drive past wide-open fields and quiet farm roads. First stop: the Tillamook Creamery, a well-run, modern visitor center that’s more than just a tourist trap. The self-guided cheese-making tour walks you through the process from curds to aging rooms, and there's something oddly satisfying about watching cheese blocks fly down conveyor belts like edible Tetris.
Friday and Saturday: Jeep Jamboree & Pacific City
The real adventure kicked off early Friday with the Tillamook Jeep Jamboree—a rugged group trail ride that winds through coastal mountains, thick forest, and muddy switchbacks. It's well-organized, and there’s a good mix of technical terrain and scenic moments, especially when you crest a ridgeline with the Pacific peeking through the trees or the mountain tops. The trails we got to wheel on were Cedar Tree, Firebreaker 5, and Sand Lake. On Cedar Tree, we got to see multiple mountains in the distance: Mount Hood, Mount Rainer, Mount St. Helens, Mount Jefferson, and Mount Adams.
In the evening, we detoured to Pacific City, just a short drive south. It's more laid-back than the busier beach towns, with wide beaches, windblown cliffs, and views of Haystack Rock (the other one—not to be confused with Cannon Beach). Grab a beer at Pelican Brewing right on the sand and kick back after a long time on the trail.
Sunday: Wind Down with an Ice Cream Tour
If you’re looking to go beyond just grabbing a cone, the Exclusive Ice Cream Experience at Tillamook Creamery is worth checking out. This guided, small-group tasting takes you behind the scenes of how Tillamook creates their iconic flavors, from sourcing to production. Over 75 minutes, you’ll sample a curated selection of flavors, learn about the science of taste, and even get a few goodies to take home—like a Tillamook mug and enamel pin. It’s a fun, interactive way to dive deeper into the Creamery’s process, and ideal if you’re visiting with kids or just want something a little more hands-on than the ice cream counter.
By the end of the weekend, we had a cooler full of cheese, sand in the floor mats, and just enough time left for one more ice cream cone before hitting the road.
TL;DR: Tillamook is more than just dairy. Come for the cheese and ice cream, stay for the off-road adventures, coastal cliffs, and slow-paced charm that makes the Oregon coast feel refreshingly unpolished.
