Some of the best trips aren't planned months in advance—they happen on a whim.
With only a rough itinerary and a sense of adventure, we packed our bags and headed north from Olympia for our very first trip to the Emerald City. What followed was a weekend filled with waterfront towns, ferry rides, city views, great coffee, and plenty of memorable moments.
Day 1: Olympia to Seattle via the Kitsap Peninsula
Rather than taking the direct route to Seattle, we decided to turn the journey itself into part of the adventure.
Our first stop was Gig Harbor, where we grabbed breakfast sandwiches from Metro Market. It was the perfect fuel for the road ahead, and the harbor town's relaxed waterfront atmosphere made for a pleasant start to the day.
From there, we continued north to Poulsbo, often referred to as "Little Norway." Strolling through the charming downtown felt like stepping into a small Scandinavian village. We wandered along the waterfront, explored local shops, and enjoyed views of Liberty Bay as boats gently drifted through the marina.
Next came Bainbridge Island, a destination that immediately became one of our favorite parts of the trip. We spent time exploring Winslow Way, the island's vibrant downtown district filled with boutiques, cafés, and local character. One of the highlights was seeing Pia the Peacekeeper, the beloved troll sculpture tucked beneath the trees. The whimsical artwork perfectly captured Bainbridge Island's creative spirit and made for a memorable stop.
As afternoon approached, it was finally time for one of the experiences we had been looking forward to most: the ferry ride to Seattle.
Standing on the deck as the ferry crossed Elliott Bay, the Seattle skyline slowly emerged from the horizon. Seeing the city's iconic skyline for the first time felt surreal. The Space Needle, towering skyscrapers, waterfront piers, and surrounding mountains created a scene that was even more impressive in person than in photographs.
By the time we arrived in Seattle, excitement had fully taken over. We spent the evening soaking in the energy of the city and looking forward to exploring more the next day.
Day 2: Coffee, Capitol Hill, and City Exploration
Seattle and coffee go hand in hand, so naturally our morning began with a visit to Monorail Coffee.
The small coffee shop delivered exactly what we hoped for: excellent coffee and a cozy atmosphere that felt distinctly Seattle.
We enjoyed a walk to Westlake Center and the surrounding downtown area. With bustling streets, shops, lights, and people everywhere, it felt like the heart of the city. As night fell and the skyline illuminated around us, we couldn't help but appreciate how different Seattle felt from anywhere we'd previously explored in Washington.
We then headed toward Capitol Hill, one of the city's most vibrant and eclectic neighborhoods. Capitol Hill quickly became one of our favorite areas in Seattle. The neighborhood's mix of historic buildings, colorful murals, independent businesses, and energetic streets created an atmosphere unlike anywhere else we'd visited. Every block seemed to offer something new to discover.
Later in the day, we made our way to Gas Works Park. Built on the site of a former gasification plant, the park combines industrial history with some of the best views in Seattle. Looking across Lake Union toward downtown provided an incredible perspective of the skyline, and it quickly became one of our favorite photo locations of the trip.
For something completely different, we spent part our evening at The Escape Game's "Ruins" experience. Solving puzzles, uncovering clues, and racing against the clock added a fun and unexpected adventure to our Seattle itinerary. The challenge was immersive, exciting, and a great break from traditional sightseeing.
Day 3: Fremont Sunday Market
Before heading home, we made one final stop that perfectly captured Seattle's creative personality after stopping at Joe & The Juice for a quick drink and snack.
The Fremont Sunday Market was full of local vendors, artists, vintage sellers, food stands, and unique finds. Every corner offered something unexpected, from handcrafted goods to quirky collectibles and delicious street food.
What made the market so enjoyable wasn't just the shopping—it was the atmosphere. Musicians played nearby, conversations filled the air, and the neighborhood's famous creative spirit was on full display.
It was the perfect way to end our first Seattle adventure.
Final Thoughts
What started as a last-minute getaway turned into one of our favorite Washington road trips.
From breakfast in Gig Harbor and waterfront walks in Poulsbo to discovering Bainbridge Island, riding the ferry across Elliott Bay, and finally seeing the Seattle skyline for the first time, every part of the journey felt special.
Seattle exceeded our expectations. Its diverse neighborhoods, incredible coffee culture, waterfront views, and unique attractions offered something new around every corner. Combined with the scenic drive through the Kitsap Peninsula and the iconic ferry ride into the city, the entire experience felt like an adventure from start to finish.
While this may have been our first visit to Seattle, it definitely won't be our last.
